Under 14 Girls footballers shine at Feniton
Our Under 14 girl footballers were invited, following their recent impressive performance in the schools' County finals, to play in an invitational 6 aside event hosted by Feniton Football Club.
The team were placed in a group containing Ivybridge, Dawlish, St James (Exeter), King Edward VI (Torquay) and Sidmouth and following a series of impressive wins and a draw against Sidmouth, finished top of the group and with it a semi-final spot against Edward VI from Torquay. The game was closely fought and a single goal from Katie Smith gave Chulmleigh a 1-0 victory and a place in the final against Ivybridge Sports College.
Having already beaten Ivybridge 1-0 in the group stages the girls knew that the game would be closely fought and so it proved! By the end of normal time the score remained locked at 0-0 and so the tournament was to be decided by a dreaded penalty shoot-out! The two teams remained inseparable and after all 6 outfield players had taken their penalties it was the turn of the goalkeepers, but still the two teams remained equal. Sudden death followed and regretfully Ivybridge won the shoot-out 9-8 and with it the prize of the inaugural ‘ATASS Group’ sponsored U14 Girls Champions title, but Chulmleigh should be equally proud of their own achievement.
Special mention to Becky Holmes (our goalkeeper) for her impeccable record of not conceding a goal until the penalty shot-out and to Bronwyn Cousins for her six individual goals, but credit to each and every one of the squad who have demonstrated that with hard work and determination great achievements can be made. They have further propelled Chulmleigh Community College’s name when it comes to girls football.
Well done girls we are all very proud of you!
