Behaviour Management and Anti-bullying Policy
Statement of Intent
CAT Preschools Limited believes that children flourish best when they know how they are expected to behave and should be free to play and learn without fear of being hurt or unfairly restricted by anyone else.
We aim to provide an environment where there is acceptable behaviour and children learn to respect themselves and other people, where any bullying is eradicated, (all incidents of bullying will be treated seriously and responded to promptly and sensitively), and which fosters and develops tolerance, motivation, self-discipline, self-esteem, independence, responsibility, equality of opportunity and helps children prepare for their place in the world.
What do we mean by Bullying?
“Bullying is defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves.”
DFEE Circular 10/95 ‘Protecting Children from Abuse’.
“Bullying can involve threats, teasing, interfering with belongings, sexually and racially offensive conduct, ridicule, the invasion of privacy, vandalism and intimidation. Bullying may also show itself in more subtle ways such as name calling and by children excluding others from games or activities”.
“Each of these bullying activities has in common the intention by one child or a group of children to inflict a damaging effect upon another.”

- All staff, including volunteers and students, will provide a positive model of behaviour by treating children, parent/carers and one another with friendliness, care and courtesy. We do not shout or raise our voices in a threatening way to respond to children's behaviour.
- All staff, volunteers and students will use positive strategies for handling any conflicts by helping children find solutions in ways which are appropriate for the children's ages and stages of development, for example distraction, praise and reward. When children behave in unacceptable ways, we help them to see what was wrong and how to cope more appropriately.
- We will praise and endorse desirable behaviour such as kindness and willingness to share.
- We avoid creating situations in which children receive adult attention only in return for undesirable behaviour.
- We never use physical punishment, such as smacking or shaking. Children are never threatened with these.
- In the event of physical restraint being used, such as holding to prevent physical injury to child/ren or adults, and/or serious damage to property, we record details of such an event using Behaviour Management Record sheets and file in our Incident Book. The parent/carers are informed on the same day and sign the record sheet to indicate that they have been informed of any incident.
- We work in partnership with the child/ren’s parent/carers who are regularly informed about their child/ren's behaviour, and meet to discuss certain strategies to address any recurring, unacceptable behaviour. We use observations to help us to understand the cause, and to decide jointly how to respond appropriately.
- In cases of serious misbehaviour, such as racial or other abuse, we make clear immediately the unacceptability of the behaviour and attitudes, by means of explanations rather than personal blame.
- Staff will intervene and explain to the child doing the bullying why his/her behaviour is inappropriate, and give reassurance to the child/ren who have been bullied.
- Parents/carers will be involved at an early stage when instances of bullying occur to discuss what has happened.
- Staff will monitor and build a picture of incidents leading to bullying and this will be shared with all staff as soon as possible.
