Modern Foreign Languages
Bienvenue / Willkommen / Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Department
“A different language is a different vision of life”
Federico Fellini, Italian film director
At Chulmleigh Community College we believe that learning a language opens up new opportunities and gives the students perspectives that they might never have encountered otherwise.
At KS3, Years 7, 8 and 9 study French. We work on developing their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. We use a wide range of genuine materials via use of ICT.
We are currently working on creating a Language blog for students and parents to access and using Skype for communicating with the students from Bergerac.
We work closely with our Primary feeder schools in order to make the transition easier and support the Primary school teachers with their teaching of Languages.
Spanish and German clubs run on a weekly basis for those who are interested in starting with another Language.
At KS4 year 10 and 11 students are studying the full GCSE course with Edexcel where Speaking and Writing count for 30% each and Listening and Reading for 20% each.
Speaking and Writing are assessed through controlled assessments and the Listening and Reading skills are assessed by exams in May/June.
We like to give the opportunity to our students to experience French culture by offering a language day and exciting trips:
- Paris trip (for KS4 students during October half term)
- The Futuroscope (Y9/10 students – in May)
- Language day for all years once every two years
- French exchange with a school in Bergerac where Y9 students have the opportunity to stay with French families
- Trip to Brittany for Year 8 students
