There have been significant changes to the way children are assessed at GCSE level and in Key Stage Three (Years 7-9). Set out below you will see detail on the new style GCSE grades that are replacing A*-U and also information on how we are reporting your child’s progress.
New GSCE Grades.
Following Government reforms to GCSEs, new grades have been brought into use. Grades 9-1 have replaced the familiar grades A*-G. Below you will see a table from Ofqual, which details the changes and how new grades can be viewed against old ones. The new grade 9 is designed to be more challenging than the old A*. The Government anticipate that the top 2% of old A* standard pupils will gain a grade 9. Likewise, a grade 5 will be the new expected standard which is more challenging to achieve than an old-style C grade:
How will we report progress to you?
Progress in Year 11 is reported as the grade that we feel the pupil is likely to achieve as their final GCSE grade. A*-U is the measure for all subjects, with the exception of English and Maths. English and Maths are the first subjects where the new style GCSE grades are in use. The grade range is 9-1 and these grades are completely different to the National Curriculum Levels we have formally used in Years 7-9.
Progress in Year 10 is reported as the grade we feel the pupil is likely to achieve as their final GCSE grade. All GCSEs are using new style GCSE grades (9-1) with the exception of Resistant Materials, Business and Communication Studies and ICT, where traditional A*-C is still in use. The new 9-1 grades are completely different to the National Curriculum Levels we used in Years 7-9. Target grades are also reported in this format and this is the grade we are challenging your child to reach – but in many cases we would hope they will exceed this.
I would also draw your attention to Science grades. Most pupils are following Combined Sciences and many Single Sciences. Combined Sciences are two GCSE grades and therefore your child will have two grades for this subject. If you child has opted for Single Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), we shall report three single grades.
Years 7, 8 & 9
Progress in these year groups is reported by plotting pupils’ current work against GCSE standard. By doing this we feel that progress is more straightforward to track from Year 7 to Year 11. A target grade is given, which states the grade pupils are aiming towards by the end of Year 11.
In Year 7 Science is unable to report progress against GCSE grades until Half Term 3. This is due to the nature of Science spanning three distinct subject areas (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
Most pupils will not exceed the following grades in each Year Group:
Year 7 – 2b
Year 8 -3b
Year 9 – 4b
When looking at current grade you should compare them to the grades above.
The College uses data from the Fisher Family Trust to set targets for pupils in each subject. The targets are set using your child’s Year 6 SATs results and sets a grade that they should attain at the end of Year 11 if they make good progress in line with the top 20% of their peers who also attained the same levels in Year 6.
Targets are designed to be stretching and to motivate the pupil. The College will amend targets (up or down) where we feel it appropriate to do so.
