Reporting Progress

Assessment & Reporting

We will provide a report on your child’s progress each half term, therefore parents/carers will receive six reports in total per year for each child they have in the College.

We report on the following categories:

Quality of Written Communication (QWC)

Your child’s teachers will provide a grade that demonstrates the quality of their use of written language in each subject. The ability to write clearly, succinctly and with subject appropriate vocabulary, is incredibly important in order to be successful. This section on the report allows parents/carers to see not only how well their child performs in this regard, but in what subjects this is strong or needs development. Each grade has the following descriptor:

Effort Grades

Hard work is vital and the key to success in education. We report to you how hard your child is working in each subject by assigning an effort grade. The effort grade is not linked to high ability or even high outcomes academically (although the two often do go together) and they capture the level of effort your child is putting into each subject.
Mr Johnson presents Scholar Awards to the top ten pupils in each year group with the highest effort each half term.

Professional Judgements and Comments

Finally, we will share with you how well your child has achieved academically each half term. For subjects in Years 7, 8 and 9 where pupils see their teachers once a week – this information is shared once a term.
There is a difference in how your child’s performance is reported, depending on whether they are in the lower school (Years 7-9) or upper school (Years 10 and 11). Please see below for a summary of this. Where a teacher wishes to convey something specifically to you and where they have a concern, they will add a comment to the report.

Lower School:

Grade	Descriptor
A	Pupil is working well above the expected standard at Chulmleigh College for their year of study.
B	Pupil is working above the expected standard at Chulmleigh College for their year of study.
C	Pupil is working at the expected standard at Chulmleigh College for their year of study.
D	Pupil is working towards the expected standard at Chulmleigh College for their year of study.
E	Pupil is working below the expected standard at Chulmleigh College for their year of study.

Upper School:

Your child’s teacher will record a professional judgement, which is a prediction of the grade they feel your child is likely to achieve at the end of the course, based on their current approach to their studies. We fine-grade the judgements so you can see how secure your child is in the grade, and whether they are likely to move into the grade above or below.

This is an example using a grade 5:
5a – Top of grade 5, pushing grade 6
5b – middle and secure 5
5c – Could achieve grade 5 but at risk of dropping to a 4 grade – insecure.

This is reviewed each half term and judgements change based on how well your child is working.

Target Grades:

This is the target grade the College has set your child based on the Department for Education’s guidance on progress from their SATS at KS2. We moderate and change these target grades where required.

Target grades do not reflect a glass ceiling for our pupils. They are targets to work to, reach and then pass. Pupils at Chulmleigh College routinely achieve above their target grade.
