Transition to Chulmleigh College
Welcome
Moving from primary to secondary school is an important event, and we want to ensure this move is both successful and exciting. We are committed to ensuring the next stage in your child's education has a positive start, and we always look forward to meeting our new pupils.
The College will be in regular contact with your child’s current primary school to support transition. Members of the College Transition Team will visit primary schools, attend meetings, and participate in all transition events to ensure valuable knowledge is gained about the children who will be joining us.
I am pleased to outline what will happen between now and then to help with a smooth transition
Ms Louise Miller-Marshall
Academy SENDCo/Assistant Headteacher
March – Online Admission form and information
Our admissions forms are completed online. You will receive a welcome email with login details and the link to your online application.
Included with this will be details regarding uniform, our payment and communication systems, Accelerated Reader, and our Trust transport. Should you require support with completing your child’s admission form, please contact admin@chulmleigh.devon.sch.uk.
March/April - Welcome Evening
Before the Easter holidays we hold a welcome evening for parents and Year 6 pupils to meet with various members of staff. This provides an overview of the College and what to expect when you join us, including information about our plans for transition and how we will provide your child with the best start to their secondary school life.
April-June - Primary School Visits
Ms Miller-Marshall and our Transition Team usually visit primary schools between April and June each year. During these visits we share our Welcome Booklet, which is full of useful information for you and your child.
Global Cup We offer Year 6 pupils the opportunity to participate in our annual Humanities transition project, the Global Cup. Pupils are encouraged to research a country of their choice through the perspectives of History, Geography and Religious Studies, helping them to develop the knowledge and skills that will support their Key Stage 3 Humanities studies and beyond. Your child’s primary school will be offered an online or in-person lesson delivered by Chulmleigh Humanities teaching staff to introduce the project and provide guidance. Pupils are encouraged to complete their projects over the summer term and holiday period, with opportunities for further support available during the start of Year 7. Final projects can be handwritten or produced digitally and should showcase pupils’ own research, creativity and ideas. Pupils’ work may be shared through our social media pages, and all entries will be considered for the prestigious Global Cup awards. The winning pupil’s name and their primary school will be engraved on the trophy, which is displayed alongside the College’s longstanding awards.
Year 6 Transition Day and Parents’ Evening
In July each year we invite our new pupils to join us for a Transition Day. This day is a great way to get to know the school, meet key members of staff and for our new pupils to have some of their questions answered. We send out invitation letters for this event, which also confirm the House and Tutor Group your child has been allocated to. The Year 6 Parents’ Evening takes place at the end of the Transition Day.
