Careers Provision at Chulmleigh College

Chulmleigh Academy Trust is committed to ensuring there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access pupils, for the purpose of informing them about approved technical education qualifications and apprenticeships.  Chulmleigh Academy Trust is fully aware of the responsibility to set pupils on the path that will secure the best outcome which will enable them to progress in education and work and give employers the highly skilled people they need. That means acting impartially, in line with the statutory duty, and not showing bias towards any route, be that academic or technical.
Chulmleigh Academy Trust endeavours to ensure that all pupils are aware of all routes to higher skills and are able to access information on technical options and apprenticeships (The Department of Education, July 2021: “Baker Clause”: supporting pupils to understand the full range of education and training options, and the Provider Access Legislation, January 2023).

Careers Education, Information and Guidance (CEIAG) is an entitlement delivered at Chulmleigh College for all pupils from Year 7 to Year 11. High-quality careers guidance is important for our pupils’ futures, and our provision aims to:

  • Help pupils prepare for the workplace, by building self-development and career management skills
  • Provide experience and a clear understanding of the working world
  • Develop pupils’ awareness of the variety of education, training and careers opportunities available to them
  • Help pupils to understand routes to careers that they’re interested in, and to make informed choices about their next step in education or training
  • Take into account the individual needs of all pupils to tailor the programme accordingly and provide the right level of support
  • Promote a culture of high aspirations and equality of opportunity

Our Careers Provision supports pupils to develop, review and plan for life at post-16 and beyond. Where some pupils may have very strong notions regarding further study and life choices, others will need support and encouragement to start to explore and develop the possibilities for their futures. Care is taken to provide impartial advice that suitably informs pupil choices about a broad range of Post 16 provision as well as career options.

Our careers lead is Ms Thorncroft, Deputy Headteacher, and they can be contacted by phoning 01764 582 106 or emailing athorncroft@chulmleigh.devon.sch.uk.

Detailed information about the school’s provision can be found in our Careers Guidance Policy.

This policy has been developed based on current good practice guidelines by the Department for Education and is reviewed annually by the Careers Leader and Headteacher and approved by the governing board at every review. It supports and is underpinned by key school policies including those for Child Protection, Equality and Diversity, and SEND.
