Year 7

Term Topic & Key Content Additional Reading & Resources
Autumn Wooden Pencil Box
Pupils learn and develop knowledge of H&S in the workshop using a wide range of hand tools and machinery, including tenon saws, coping saws, and drum sanders. Pupils create half lap joints and butt joints to secure their pencil box. Pupils decorate their pencil box using their own designs and inspiration to create a high quality product.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Spring Structures and Sketching
Pupils use knowledge of smart and modern materials to generate design ideas for Olympic products. Pupils develop their 2D rendering skills, and 3D CAD Skills using Sketchup, Tinkercad and 2D design. Pupils develop communication and team work skills to produce solutions to stem Bridge and Tower Building Tasks.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Summer Photo Frame inspired by the Memphis Design Movement
Pupils draw upon previous knowledge of H&S in the workshop using a wide range of hand tools and machinery whilst working with timber, acrylic and metal.  They will research, design and make a photo frame using a range of materials.  Pupils will research and be inspired by the works of well known designers.

Year 8

Term Topic & Key Content Additional Reading & Resources
Autumn Eco Lamp
Pupils learn about the iterative design process.  They create an Eco-Lamp combining Timber and Polymers. Pupils develop their practical skills by independently creating a comb joint and butt joint for the base of their lamp.  They use a range of hand tools and machinery such as Tenon saws, coping saws, pillar drill and metal rules for accurate measuring, line bender or fan circulated oven to shape acrylic.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Spring Metals Trophy
Pupils increase their knowledge of multi materials, by designing and making an aluminium and timber trophy. They learn about the metal casting process, and focus on creating a high quality finish using machinery and hand tools such as hacksaws, hammers, emery paper and pillar drills.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Summer Timber Desk Tidy
Pupils learn about ergonomics and anthropometic data and how it is used when designing and making products.  Pupils research target markets, user needs and wants, to generate a specification.  They use a range of hand tools and machinery to make a good quality desk tidy that is ergonomically effective.

Year 9

Term Topic & Key Content Additional Reading & Resources
Autumn Multi Materials
Pupils investigate material properties of papers and boards, textiles, timbers, metals and polymers.  They construct an animal slice toy using card.  They investigate the properties of textiles to create a sample of felted fabric.
Metals Trophy
Pupils increase their knowledge of multi metals by designing and making an aluminium and timber trophy. They learn about the metal casting process, and focus on creating a high quality finish using machinery and hand tools such as hacksaws, hammers, emery paper and pillar drills.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Spring Timber Clock
Pupils build on their knowledge by researching existing designers, target markets, user needs and wants to generate a specification.  They independently design and make a timber based clock using a range of multi materials to decorate in a style of choosing influenced by an existing design movement.  They will independently use a range of hand tools and machinery to attach a clock mechanism and create a high quality functional product.
BBC Bitesize KS3 Design & Technology
Summer  Speaker Project
Pupils create a product combining electronics and multi materials. Pupils research user wants and needs to generate a specification. Pupils develop their electronics knowledge of systems diagrams and soldering to create a working speaker circuit with fly leads. Pupils work independently to create a working speaker demonstrating a range of skills, including the use of CAD.
