Physical Education

Create healthy habits, not restrictions

What makes PE excellent at Chulmleigh?

At Chulmleigh, we support the core values of the school, as well as having our own: inclusion, participation and engagement, enjoyment, and very high expectations. We believe in the philosophy of “being the best versions of themselves.”

In order to achieve our aims, we teach the following through the curriculum:

  • Successful learners: To make progress, achieve and strive for excellence in PE whilst enjoying the subject.
  • Leadership: To develop skills that will enable pupils to lead themselves and others towards fulfilling lives.
  • Healthy lifestyle: To develop habits that promote a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Teamwork: To work effectively with anybody and everybody.

Our curriculum is inclusive and unbiased, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the same activities, regardless of tradition or gender. We tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of our learners and use setting to ensure that all pupils are appropriately challenged.

Assessment

Pupils in Key Stage 3 are assessed using the Head, Heart, Hands assessment strategy, which consists of three separate strands. Each strand has six sub-strands:

  • Head: Knowledge, Understanding, Analysis, Feedback, Responsibility and Rules
  • Heart: Communication, Leadership, Respect, Resilience, Effort and Confidence
  • Hands: Physical Ability, Fitness Levels, Competition, Technique, Tactics and Problem Solving

Pupils will be assessed across two selected strands within each taught unit of work but will always receive a ‘Hands’ assessment. Therefore, Head and Heart assessments will alternate between each unit.

Each unit is assessed throughout the year, with the outcomes translated into the school’s assessment system at the end of each half term.
