Religious Education

Religious Education is a statutory subject in England in secondary schools. Here at Chulmleigh, pupils follow this RE as a discrete subject from year seven through to year eleven. In years ten and eleven pupils have the option to complete a half GCSE in both years and the proportion of those achieving a C grade or above is very high.

It is important to note that this is a subject that deals with philosophical questions on life. This is not a guidance based course that seeks to promote a particular faith or way of thinking. Indeed, pupils are encouraged to critically assess everything they study and hear in an RE classroom at Chulmleigh. There are some facts in RE – these surround what people believe to be true, the fact is that they believe. However, what pupils and staff choose to believe is personal and often a private matter. It is hoped that by studying RE in this way pupils will leave school with the capacity to ask critical questions and moreover, make considered, rational and well informed decisions on matters of faith and morality.

Students have the option to take Religious and Citizenship Education at GCSE. The syllabus followed can be found here.
