Sea, Moor, Explore

In 2017 pupils, ex-pupils, parents and staff of Chulmleigh College set up a new charity called 'Sea Moor Explore' - an exciting club which aims to provide fun and adventurous outdoor activities for young people in north and mid Devon.

Whilst fervour for adventure is tremendous, practical opportunities are few and far between; even though North Devon and the rest of the UK offer an abundance of thrilling places to explore. Sea Moor Explore aims to provide young people with the chance to participate in adventurous activities in the great outdoors, to inspire them to undertake escapades of their own, and to promote and encourage personal development through engagement in these adventures.

We have monthly trips out to the moor, rivers, lakes, beaches, coastline and woodland, to climb, surf, sail, walk and cycle etc. These events are for pupils of secondary school and sixth form age, who wish to share challenging outdoor activities with like-minded people of their own age. Recent activities have included: stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking in Exeter, skiing in Plymouth and climbing at Rock and Rapid. Over the summer term we will be canyoning on Dartmoor, surfing at Saunton, going to the Wake Park near Bideford and coasteering along the glorious North Devon coast.

As well as planned activities, in 2018 we trained a team to complete a 55-mile route in the 2018 Ten Tors Challenge. The six participants aged 16-18 trained over the winter, and eventually completed their 55-mile challenge in under 19 hours. After a gap due to the pandemic, we entered 35-mile and 45-mile teams in the 2022 Ten Tors Challenge. Our 35-mile team was made up exclusively of Year 9 pupils from Chulmleigh, who learnt so much to be self-sufficient in navigating and camping on the moor during the challenge.
